Excellent article, especially in the midst of this economic downturn. I would like to share my story. In 2009, my full-time job (40 hours/week) was reduced to part time (20 hours/week). Making only half of what I used to wasn't going to cut it for me. Therefore, I wasted no time in putting my marketable skills into the market. During my hours at home, I accepted baby-sitting jobs from friends, taught piano lessons, sew custom outfits, baked made to order unique cakes. "Odd jobs" aren't as bad as they sound when you are able to enjoy doing them. I consider myself lucky because I have quite a lot of friends and aquaintances. Looking for "odd jobs" wasn't and isn't hard for me.

I live in a development with several hundred houses. Some people advertise by putting their ads in the community newsletter It's a great way to let your neighbor hood know what kind of odd jobs you can do, and they tend to feel safer with someone local helping them.

I have several family members that have made a lot of money doing this. Many people these days just don't know how to do simple home repairs, such as leaky faucets, minor mechanical repairs, etc. A lot of single woman or elderly will gladly pay a knowledgible individual a reasonable hourly rate in order to avoid the costly repairs (and time wasted waiting!) for a plumber or other repair company. Set your own schedule and rates, and in no time at all you will have more jobs lined up than you ever imagined!

I have tried this before and it is difficult but it does work if you know how to market yourself. Putting in the ad how you can benefit the person will help greatly instead of only posting looking for work good with my hands etc.
